If you want to know how and what to teach a kid ask their parent- their Heavenly Parent.
As a young school teacher interning in the first grade I got to know my students very well. So well that I was certain I knew more about my students than their parents did. After all, I was the one with the degree who spent all day, every day, with these kids. What an eye opener it was for me when the first parent teacher conference came around.
I was particularly looking forward to talking to the parents of a student who had been misbehaving in class so I could give my “sage advice” on how to “fix” this child. In less than ten minutes of conferencing with this mother, I learned I should be asking HER for advice. She had been teaching her son for far more years than I could claim. And she knew her son far better than I. I had a lot to learn, including humility.
As teachers of the young spirits entrusted to our care we should not neglect to conference with their Father. Their Heavenly Father, the one who created them, knows best how to teach His children and how to meet their specific needs. He loves them even more than we do and knows what they can become. If we will ask, He will help us.
Begin this school year with a “Parent Teacher Conference”. Ask God about your child and what you can do to teach him. You will discover what I did- God is very willing to help you help His children. I have never seen the hand of the Lord more vividly in my life than when I am humbly homeschooling. He cares about you and your child. He knows what to do. Ask Him and then let His Spirit guide you. And you will watch miracles unfold in your own home and heart.
