Taking the Wheel to Your Child's Education

Taking the wheel of your children’s education is equal parts terrifying and liberating. But once you learn to lean into the curves, you’ll enjoy the ride.

My oldest son is 17 and we joke that him getting his drivers license is the best thing that ever happened. We live in a rural area, so driving far to do anything is just how we roll. Taxiing a busy teen around was becoming a full time job. Since getting his license, he and I (and baby brother in the car seat) have found new freedom. It is wonderful!

I have a 14 year old daughter who will be starting drivers ed soon and is terrified at the thought of learning to drive. She is worried she might hurt someone, or herself, or the car. What if she makes mistakes? What if she is bad at it? Totally valid concerns from a complete novice.

I see the same trepidation in new homeschoolers. It can be absolutely terrifying to take the wheel of your child’s education when you are used to taking a back seat while the public school drives. When learning anything new, you are going to make mistakes and that’s okay. The learning curve to homeschool may seem steep. But, just like my teen son discovered and my daughter soon will, the freedom you find once you get the hang of it is SO worth the initial fear of getting behind the wheel!

There are going to be smooth roads and some rough ones along your way. And always some unexpected curves. But the best views are usually along the roughest roads, so don’t get discouraged if the ride is a bit bumpy. It may just mean you are on your way to something great. So buckle up, your homeschool adventure is about to begin and it’s your turn to drive.
